
Keeping Eyes Safe When Using Heating Lamps
When we design our infrared lamps, we’re juggling two things: getting enough heat into the room and making sure the light doesn’t hurt anyone. If you’re setting up a lamp for newborns or sensitive livestock, the heat isn’t actually the biggest worry. It’s the light spectrum. Standard short-wave IR can throw off a lot of blue light or UV radiation. For a fully developed eye, it’s one thing, but for an underdeveloped retina? That’s a real problem.
How we handle the light
To keep those eyes safe, we basically shift the light. We use special quartz coatings or filtered envelopes to block out those harsh, short-wave frequencies. This pushes the lamp to work in the mid-wave or long-wave IR range. These waves soak into the skin to keep things warm, but they don’t hit the retina with that aggressive intensity you get from a raw halogen element. You’ll notice a softer, redder glow. It looks nicer, sure, but it’s actually a technical necessity. We have to keep the light intensity low enough that it doesn’t cause any photochemical damage to the eye.
The trade-off
Here’s the thing: when you dial back the light, you lose some of that “instant-on” punch you get with standard lamps. It takes a little longer to hit peak temperature. To fix that, we tweak the filament density. It’s a bit of extra engineering on our end to make sure you still get a steady stream of heat, even with the filter in the way.
A few tips for installation
When you’re wiring these into a coop or a bathroom, keep an eye on the housing. Because we’ve shifted the spectrum, the heat spreads out a bit differently—it’s more diffused. Make sure your mounting brackets can actually handle the wattage. You don’t want them warping under the heat. And be careful not to over-spec the wattage in a tiny space. Even if the light is “safe,” you can still overheat the fixture if there’s no room for the heat to move.
