Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just about every surface. In a place like that, a basic heater isn’t just a bad choice—it’s a risk. The real trick to making this work is closing the gap between the heating element and the outer shell so electricity stays exactly where it belongs. The battle against moisture You’ll see “IP65” thrown around a lot. But look past the rating. For us, it’s about the actual build. We use quartz envelopes that are sealed tight and gaskets that actually stop water from sneaking into the electrical terminals. It comes down to how well the materials handle a soak. We use stuff that stops current from leaking, even when the whole casing is dripping with condensation. Because if a seal gives way, that moisture creates a path for the electricity to wander. And that’s how you end up with a short circuit. Stopping the “creep” Usually, the first thing to break is where the wire hits the lamp. It’s the weakest link. To fix this, we wrap those joints in specialized potting compounds and reinforced insulators. It stops something we call “creepage.” Basically, moisture can create a thin film on the surface of an insulator, and electricity can actually “crawl” across it. By using non-conductive polymers and giving that current a longer, harder path to travel, we keep the leakage current way below any danger zone. The hidden trade-off Here’s the catch: when you seal something this tightly to keep water out, the heat can’t get out either. The air inside the housing just sits there and gets hot. If you use cheap, thin wiring, that trapped heat will eventually cook the insulation right off your leads. You have to use a heavier gauge wire that can take the heat without melting. And honestly? Just install a dedicated Residual Current Device (RCD). Even with the best insulation in the world, building wiring can fail. An RCD is your safety net. It’s the final peace of mind that keeps everyone safe.
