Keeping Things Safe When Drying in a Chemical Fab
When you’re drying parts in a chemical fab, you’re playing with fire—literally. You’ve got volatile cleaning agents everywhere. In that kind of environment, one tiny spark or a hot surface touching the wrong thing can turn a workday into a disaster. That’s why we don’t just throw a lamp in a box; we encapsulate our IR heating lamps to make sure that never happens.
The Deal with Encapsulation
Think about a standard quartz tube. They’re fragile. Worse, they leave live electrical contacts exposed. In a chemical wash setup, that’s a recipe for trouble. So, we seal the lamp inside a protective housing. It’s more than just a cover. We use high-grade borosilicate or quartz sleeves and pair them with gaskets that don’t flinch when they hit corrosive vapors. We also get rid of open-air electrical gaps. Every single connection is potted or sealed. This means no arc-overs, even when the humidity in the room starts to spike. It just stays quiet and safe.
Handling the Chemical Stress
Chemical fumes are brutal. They’ll pit and eat through standard metal fixtures in no time. To stop that, we use 316L stainless steel or fluoropolymer coatings. These materials just don’t react with the solvents you’re using on your lines. But there’s a tricky part: heat. When things heat up, they expand. If the lamp and the housing expand at different speeds, the seal snaps. We spend a lot of time matching the thermal expansion rates so the enclosure stays airtight, whether you’re ramping up the heat or cooling down fast.
The Trade-off
Here’s the honest part. Putting a safety barrier between the heat source and your workpiece means you lose a little bit of that direct IR intensity. You aren’t getting a bare bulb here. To make up for that, you’ll probably need to bump up your power settings or go with a higher wattage lamp. If you’re aiming for high-speed drying, just double-check that your power supply can handle the extra load needed to push that heat through the safety sleeve. It’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.
